Brussels is easily one of our favourite cities. The Belgian capital has a really special atmosphere because it’s so vibrant and multicultural. We’ve visited Brussels together a few times now so we thought we’d share some tips to inspire you all! Here’s our top 5…
#5 Molenbeek Street Art
The Molenbeek quarter of Brussels isn’t somewhere you’d necessarily on the tourist trail but it’s well worth a visit for any art lovers out there. The canal especially is a hotspot for street art. The walls of the canal and many of the buildings are covered in amazing graffiti and paintings. Take a stroll along the waterside and look out for all the murals along your journey! The quarter is easy to reach from the centre of town by tram. Why not stop for a quick drink in one of the canal-side bars? Sitting and watching the world go by on a warm summer’s day is just dreamy!
#4 Parking 58
At a first glance, Parking 58 is just an unassuming car park in the centre of Brussels. However, it’s a real insider’s tip which we’re sure won’t remain a hidden gem for long! The highest storey of the car park is open air and basically acts as a giant viewing platform right in the middle of Brussels’ beautiful skyline. From the top of the car park, you can see the Town Hall tower in the Grand Place and the cathedral on one side, and the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the other. The ideal time to visit is at sunset, but the Brussels skyline is really special at night-time too. If you look closely, you can even see St. Michael standing on the spire of the town hall!
Sometimes the top floor of the car park is closed to tourists for special theatre and dance performances. We would still recommend paying to see a show at the top of this car park – how many people can say they’ve been to a play or a ballet in such a unique location?!
#3 Parc du Cinquantenaire
The Parc du Cinquantenaire or the Jubelpark is in the east of Brussel’s European Quarter. The park is the ideal place to take a break from all your sightseeing and hang out with your friends on a warm summer’s day. As well as a relaxing atmosphere in the middle of the big city, you also have a stunning backdrop – the Arcade du Cinquantenaire. The triumphal triple arch was completed in 1905 and, together with the park, commemorates Belgian independence. The arch also houses two museums, the Royal Military Museum and Autoworld. If you fancy learning about Belgian military history or love old cars, this is definitely the place for you!
#2 MIM Restaurant
The Mont des Arts has made it onto our top 5 because the view over Grand Place and the rest of the city is absolutely stunning! The hill is the traditional art hub of the city as it’s home to the Musée des Beaux Arts. The Musical Instrument Museum is also located here in a former department store called Old England. We’re not suggesting a look round the museum though (this is not for the faint-hearted) – instead, go straight to the top of the art nouveau building and take in the gorgeous views of Brussels over lunch or a coffee in the restaurant on the 10th floor.
#1 La Grand Place after dark
You thought it was impressive at daytime? Well, it only gets better after dark! La Grand Place de Bruxelles is our favourite spot in the city at any time of the day. It’s also arguably the most beautiful square in the world (although we’ve yet to meet someone who can argue against this convincingly!).
During the last visit to the Grand Place, the square was lit up for Pride. The rainbow colours adorned the town hall and all the former guild halls and it looked absolutely gorgeous. What an amazing display of solidarity and love for all in the most beautiful square in the world!
